Bitter herbal amaro with 27 botanicals — saffron, myrrh, gentian, chamomile — 39% ABV. The bartender's handshake.
Milan, 1845, by self-taught herbalist Bernardino Branca. Originally sold as a digestive medicinal tonic; the family-owned Fratelli Branca distillery still uses the same recipe, known to only three people at any time. The Argentine market — where it's drunk with cola — accounts for over 75% of global sales.
San Francisco bars sell more Fernet-Branca per capita than anywhere outside Argentina — a tradition seeded by Italian immigrants in the 1900s and revived by bartenders in the 1990s. Branca Menta, with added peppermint, was created in 1965 after Maria Callas asked for one over ice.
Near-black brown, served in a small glass at room temperature or on a single rock. Aggressive bitterness from gentian and quinine, menthol cool from peppermint, smoke from myrrh, finishing dry. Polarising on first sip; addictive by the third.
27 botanicals from four continents are macerated separately for up to a year, then blended and aged in Slavonian oak vats for 12+ months before bottling. Saffron — the most expensive ingredient — is added late and gives the throat-warming finish.
Variations
Branca Menta sweetens and adds peppermint, served frozen. Fernet 1845 (released 2015) is a higher-proof anniversary edition aged longer in oak. Other Italian fernets — Luxardo, Vittone, Stock 84 — are softer and less bitter; Branca remains the benchmark.

- 143200 min
Macerate 27-botanical blend (saffron, myrrh, gentian, chamomile, etc.) in 1 L neutral spirit 30 days.
Watch outMacerate the 27 botanicals a full 30 days — you're pulling out the bitter aromatics slowly; rush it and the infusion comes out thin and flat.

Add caramel for color; sweeten lightly with sugar.

Filter; age in oak 12 months for depth.
Watch outRest it in oak a full 12 months after filtering — that's what marries the sharp botanicals into a smooth, deep finish.
