A fish of the Indo-West Pacific, abundant along the Karnataka coast; central to the Karavali (coastal Karnataka) fish cuisine, especially the Mangalorean kane rawa fry.

Marinated in a Byadgi chili-garlic paste, coated in semolina, and shallow-fried; also simmered in coconut curries.
