Kathrikka Curry is a Sri Lankan eggplant curry cooked with a dark, roasted spice paste — eggplant simmered in a thick gravy of roasted curry powder, coconut milk, and goraka (sour garcinia). Different from Brinjal Curry (already in the database, which uses fried eggplant), this version uses raw eggplant simmered directly in the dark spice paste, creating a deeper, more intense flavor.
Kathrikka Curry (the Tamil Sri Lankan name for eggplant curry) is distinct from the Sinhalese Brinjal Curry (already in the database). The key difference: Brinjal Curry fries the eggplant first, while Kathrikka Curry simmers it raw in a dark, roasted spice paste. The result is a deeper, more intense flavor — the eggplant absorbs the roasted curry powder and goraka (sour garcinia) as it cooks. This is the Tamil Sri Lankan version, found in Jaffna and the east coast.
A bowl of dark, thick, intensely spiced eggplant curry — the eggplant has melted into the gravy, creating a rich, almost paste-like consistency. The roasted curry powder gives a deep, smoky flavor; the goraka adds a tangy sourness; the coconut milk rounds it. It is the most intense eggplant dish in Sri Lanka.
The eggplant is not fried first (unlike Brinjal Curry) — it is simmered raw in the spice paste, which allows it to absorb more flavor but also means it breaks down more (creating a thicker, paste-like consistency). The roasted curry powder must be very dark (roasted until almost burnt). The goraka adds a sourness that balances the bitterness of the roasted spices.
Variations
Some add potatoes; some use tamarind instead of goraka; some fry the eggplant briefly; the spice darkness varies.
